Tomorrow is the Dreaded 9th of February! Tomorrow I’m piloting a RIB, so today I got to be a swimmer for the test swim.
I podded with Andrew Cotter, we splashed at 4:50am (omg) and finished 1hr37min later. Water temp dropped to about 50ºF at one point and the air temp was 43ºF which easily puts it as a sub-100 swim index day. We jumped so early, it was pitch black for basically the entire swim.
For the first 30min of the swim, I didn’t feel cold at all! We hit a cold patch right around St. Francis Yacht Club, but it was still pretty tolerable. I didn’t feed or drink anything during this swim, which might have helped me stay a tad warmer, but it all worked out in the end.
There was a second pod for the test swim with Erin and Adrienne. They stayed in the middle of the channel and caught more favorable currents for much of the swim, but then Andrew and I caught up and passed them right around Muni pier.
My watch missed the last bit of the swim, but we did in fact make it all the way to the beach.
