Back in college, I bought one of Ilford’s value packs, the kind that comes with 25 sheets of RC paper and two rolls of HP5 Plus 400 film. Somehow, I had one of the rolls of film left, with an expiration year of, uh, 2013.
Last week I had a “hey what the hell” moment and decided to use it. The photos turned out surprisingly well! I was expecting super washed-out photos! Maybe they would have been if I developed them myself, but luckily the folks at Photoworks are pros.
I think I shot the whole roll across 3 days. All these quotidian moments look so dramatic in black and white! And just like with the photos from Tahoe, I really feel like I’m hitting my stride figuring out how to meter and focus the M3 and the 50mm lens.
I started with a walk around my neighborhood to get a few fun textures.

Got a picture of Joe while we were waiting for the bus after a morning swim

Brought the camera to pizza dinner, where I got to meet Benjamin’s new pup Luna

My coworker Aurea and I walked over to SF’s Leica store, they let us try out one of the Noctilux 0.95/ƒ lenses ($$$$). I joke that we played a game of “who can focus it better” but we both lost.

Took a quick lunchtime photo walk around Salesforce Park

And I finished the roll on my way home, while it was still light out
