Manhattan Photo Walk

A few years ago, I saw Jamelle Bouie’s post about walking all of Manhattan in a day and was instantly inspired. I mentioned it to a few friends, and learned that some people call walking all of Manhattan the “Broad City Challenge”.

Finally this last Saturday, I had a chance to do it! My friend Davida who lives in New York (and also likes to walk) joined and so it was a nice social, chatty endeavor.

I loaded up my Leica M3 with a roll of Kodak Ektar 100, and we set off! Normally I shoot on faster film like 400, but I had a feeling it would be very bright out, and it was! It was beneficial to have the slower film. I’ve never used Ektar 100 before, and I love how sharp it turned out. It’s fun to compare these to some of my old newsletter posts that feature the M3, where I’ve mostly shot on Fujifilm for color or Ilford for black and white.

I love the colors here, probably my second favorite of these

My new favorite building, the Jenga Tower, and also my favorite photo of the batch

Davida took this one of me!

Path

There are lots of ways to do this kind of walk, and here’s what we came up with for our plan:

We hit all of our goals, and included parts of Central Park and the entire High Line as well.

I tracked the walk on my Garmin watch, which recorded 15.83mi in 5hr15min of moving time, covering 33,244 steps.

Below is a map using my swim blog style of rendering. I added “lap” markers for the 6 pennies that I found along the way, they’ll be sure to show up in the annual pennies recap at the end of the year!
